Recent heat-soaked days have reminded us of the importance of suitable summertime attire – not least in the coming weeks, when people will travel abroad en masse, largely without restrictions for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic. With such escapes comes the dilemma of what to add to your packing list, a conundrum solved – at least in terms of footwear – with today’s announcement that Italian house Missoni will be collaborating with Suicoke on a colourful series of sandals. The best news? Suicoke x Missoni arrives this Friday (22 July 2022) – just in time for summer.
The collaboration – which comprises four different combinations of colour and texture – merges the recognisable codes of Missoni (a bold use of colour, chevron motifs, knit elements) with Suicoke’s signature performance sandals. Established in 2006, Japanese label Suicoke is known for its technical approach to footwear, seeing functional details – moulded Vibram soles and footbeds, neoprene panels and adjustable nylon straps – meet an eclectic use of colour, print and texture. It is an approach that has gained the label a cult appeal at home and across the world, compounded by the relative anonymity of those behind the label, whose identities are rumoured and debated in discussions online.
Suicoke x Missoni: ‘a coming together of two creative visions’
The collaboration centres on two of Suicoke’s existing styles – the ‘Moto’, a slip-on with double-strap fastening, and the ‘Depa’, a performance hiking-style sandal. Soles are decorated with colourful Missoni-style prints; elsewhere, there is a feeling of collage, with various colours and textures combined in a single shoe. ‘[They] express the perfect symbiosis of strong graphics, technical materials and uniqueness of the wearer,’ says Missoni. ‘[It is a partnership that] celebrates the coming together of two creative visions.’
Suicoke x Missoni – which will be available from both Missoni and Suicoke’s online stores, as well as selected retailers worldwide – is described as ‘the first collaborative project’ between the pair, nodding to the possibility of further collections ahead. §
